The John Coltrane Foundation

Mission Statement

In honor of the 75th birthday anniversary of John Coltrane, The John Coltrane Foundation was established to provide scholarships to outstanding young musicians and to create venues for these young artists to perform. The Foundation’s goal is to encourage and advance the performance of jazz music and other forms of artistic expression in the jazz idiom, which are the same goals and values embodied in the music of John Coltrane.

Scholarship specifics

The initial scholarship awards will be for the 2004-2005 academic year. This year Scholarships will be managed by The Citizens Scholarship Foundation of America (CSFA) and will be offered through the following colleges and universities.

University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA.
California Institute of The Arts, Valencia, CA.
University of California, Los Angeles, CA.
New York University, New York, N.Y.
Howard University, Washington D.C.
University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI.
North Carolina Central University, Durham, NC
University of Indiana, Bloomington, IN.

Applicants must be high school seniors or graduates planning to enroll or students who are already enrolled in a full-time undergraduate course of study in music with a concentration in JAZZ. The program will utilize standard CSFA recipient selection procedures including the consideration of past academic performance and future potential leadership and participation in school and community activities, work experience, statement of career and educational aspirations and goals, unusual personal or family circumstances, and an outside appraisal. An interview and audition will also be required.
